The COHESION – I Project (Phase 2, 2022 – 2026) continues the research project COHESION (Phase 1, 2016 – 2020). COHESION-I (Phase 2) aims to generate evidence and develop interventions to improve the response of health systems and patient satisfaction to manage Non-Communicable Diseases and Neglected Tropical Diseases in India, Mozambique, Nepal, and Peru.

The COmmunity HEalth System InnovatiON (COHESION – Phase 1) Project was a research collaboration between seven institutions from Mozambique, Nepal, Peru, and Switzerland. The main focus of the project, implemented from 2016 to 2020, was to achieve 2 objectives: The first one was to assess the barriers, enablers, and lessons for the management of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) from the policy, health system, and community levels to support the Primary Health Care (PHC) response for NCDs and NTDs. The second objective was to develop and test a package of scalable, sustainable, gender and context-appropriate interventions at policy, health system, and community levels to support PHC responses to NCDs and NTDs. The COHESION Project was funded by the Swiss Programme for Research on Global Issues for Development (r4d Program), a partnership between the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Swiss Development Cooperation Agency (SDC). The r4d Programme finances research partnerships between Switzerland and African, Asian and Latin American countries in order to provide policymakers with scientific and development-relevant knowledge. In  2022, new funding was obtained from the United Kingdom National Institute for Health and Care Research  (NIHR) for the project entitled: «COHESION – I Implementation of the COmmunity HEalth Systems Innovation Project in low- and middle-income countries» (Phase 2, 2022 – 2026). The COHESION-I project continues, in part, the work initiated during COHESION but with different objectives.

The COHESION-I Project (Phase 2) seeks to implement and evaluate context-specific interventions in Mozambique, Nepal, and Peru. This required going back to the communities and refining the ideas that were co-created during COHESION using a co-design methodology. The interventions will be assessed using quantitative, qualitative, economic, and process evaluations. The COHESION-I Project includes a new partner country, India, which aims to contextualize and implement activities conducted during COHESION and COHESION-I. This process will allow us to optimize the methods used and to understand the potential for adapting the COHESION Approach to a different context.
